GEOGRAPHIC POSITION

Lefkada is an island in the Ionian Sea and belongs to the group of Ionian Islands traditionally known as the Heptanese. It lies between Corfu and Kefalonia, and is very close to the shores of western mainland Greece. It is separated from Akarnania by a very thin strip of sea, and connected to it by a 50-metre floating bridge.

Stretching across an expanse of 302.5 km2, Lefkada is the fourth largest island in the Heptanese and has a population of 23,000. Together with the small islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Skorpios and other smaller islands surrounding them, it forms the administration of Lefkada Prefecture, the capital being the town of the same name, Lefkada.

The island has a Mediterranean climate, which is mainly defined by widespread sunshine, mild but rainy winters and hot summers that are pleasant due to the cool winds.  Lefkada’s soil is 70% mountainous. It has tall mountains such as that of Stavrota (1,182 m), Elati (1,126 m), Ai Lias (1,014 m) and Mega Oros (1,012 m). It has narrow plateaus, fertile valleys and gorges with lush vegetation, such as the Gorge of Melissa.

The two lagoons in the northern part of the island are important wetlands for many bird species. A wealth of water bodies spread across Lefkada, consisting of impressive coasts, peninsulas and capes, the most distinct being Cape Lefkatas.
